Dodge lived his adult life in Scarsdale, New York. The collection consists of a book of reminiscences for his children. In addition to his own life story, his book provides information on many of his family members, including his wife, Lila McClelland Dodge, his parents, Samuel Douglas Dodge and Jeannette May Groff, and his grandparents, George C. Dodge, Lucy A. Burton Dodge, Henry R. Groff, and Mary A. Sutherland Groff. The book contains references to prominent Clevelanders, including John D. Rockefeller. The collection is valuable as a sketch of the life of Henry Dodge and for the information it contains on the Dodge family and related families. Since the Dodges were a prominent Cleveland family, the material also includes information on the social life of Cleveland's upper class during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. | | | | Creator: | Kelly, Dawson Family | | | | Dates: | 1917-1924 | | | | Abstract: | Dawson Kelly was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a grandson of Irish immigrant Daniel Kelly. His parents were William Kelly, a plumber, and Mary Dawson. He married Anna Melia in 1920. She had arrived in Cleveland from Ireland ca. 1912. Dawson Kelly served in the United States Army from 1918-1919. He initially was stationed at Camp Gordon in Atlanta, Georgia, and later was sent to France. During this time, he and Anna Melia exchanged letters. After his return to Cleveland, he worked as a plumber, and also at Westinghouse Company. A child, William Austin, was born to Dawson and Anna Kelly in 1921. In 1922, Anna Kelly became ill with tuberculosis and died in 1923. Dawson Kelly formed the D.W. Kelly Moving Company ca. 1925. It later became known as the D.W. Kelly & Son Moving Company. He remarried in 1929 and had three more children. The collection consists of correspondence, postcards, greeting cards, a job referral, and receipts. Dawson Kelly's letters as a soldier in the United States Army during World War I reflect his experiences, both at Camp Gordon, Atlanta, Georgia, and in Toul, France. The collection consists of diaries of Herman Vail, 1909-1922, correspondence of Herman and his father, Harry Vail, announcements for gatherings, certificates of membership, and telegrams. The collection pertains largely to Herman Vail's early life and touches upon his experiences at University School in Cleveland, Princeton University and Harvard Law School, his World War I experiences and his European travels. He was a member of Cleveland's Troop A, serving with the First Squadron Ohio Cavalry during the Mexican border dispute of 1916-1917, and with the 135th Field Artillery in France during World War I, commanding the unit from August 1917 to April 1919. He retired a brigadier general in 1936. His father, Curtis V. Hard, of Wooster, Ohio, served as a colonel in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Cuban campaign of 1898. The collection consists of military orders, bulletins, memoranda, rosters, payrolls, maps, war diaries, tactical procedures, discharge records, correspondence, newspaper clippings, certificates of commission, and a souvenir volume and programs. Included are records relating to the Eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the 135th Field Artillery, the 62nd Field Artillery Brigade and the 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and souvenir volumes concerning various Cleveland military units. Also included are documents relating to the military career and death of Curtis V.
